The manufacture and sales of the well known Markusnet man-overboard
recovery system has recently been moved from Iceland to UK. The company responsible for
the production now bears the same name, Markus Lifenet (UK.) Ltd. The designer of the
product Petur Th. Petursson moved with the product and is now responsible for the quality
and sales. "We moved to be in a better contact with the international marine market
and to be able to provide a better service to our customers and to be able to provide our
man-overboard safety expertise not only to the operators of large vessels, but also to the
small workboat and leisure boat users", said Petur.
Our main product, the Markusnet and the
Markus Lifenet man overboard rescue technique was invented and developed in Iceland, by
the late captain Markus B. Thorgeirsson.
After experiencing the limits of the
traditional life-buoy ( Life-ring), when loosing several of his friends through 30 years
at sea, captain Markus B. Thorgeirsson decided in 1979, then retired, to challenge the
life-buoy and find out if he could develop realistic means to enable quick, safe and
effective man overboard rescue equipment. The result of his pioneering work was the now
well known Markus Lifenet or Markusnet as named in his honour by the late Captain Hannes
Hafstein, then the Managing Director of the Lifesaving Association in Iceland.
Captain Markus made the first design and
introduced the basic idea in 1981. In November 1984 the pioneer died, after he had proved
the need for his equipment in the Icelandic society, where the Markusnet has been used to
rescue numerous lives and where the Markusnet is anonymously accepted and required on
every vessel and quay, due to its excellence. His son-in-law Petur Th. Petursson, who is a
former seaman, sailing instructor and teacher, had been working with Capt. Markus for
about an year when he died, took over the project, to pass the experience and know-how to
the future generations and to the marine world outside Iceland.
In the end of the year 2000, Petur and
his wife Katrin decided to move the manufacturing and their location to Scotland to be in
position to introduce the Markus Lifenet man overboard safety and rescue technique to the
International marine society and to launch several new
man-overboard products for the workboat and leisure boat users. In January 2001 they
established the Markus Lifenet (UK.) Ltd. and have since then manufactured the Markusnet
and developed the new products in Scotland.
Our main product is the Markusnet type MS
packed in glassfibre container. We make this type in 4 standard Lloyd's Register approved
versions for commercial boats, ships, offshore installations and landbased facility near
water, such as quays, canals and dams.
